F100 sounds cool. I wish they hadn't let the Ranger rot though. There's a lot of them in my apartment complex, one of them is parked next to the Sonoma actually lol. Its pretty much the only truck I see nowadays thats actually used as a tool for work and nothing else (90% of the time).
I think the F100 is gonna end up being the size of the Colorado though....
i like the both names... making it the F100 would put its name in line with the rest of the trucks, which would be a good thing. they could market it as a smaller F150 and use the F-Series reputation to boost its sales. i only want them to use the F100 name if they're gonna do it right, though.
well A. they should have brought the 4 door ranger here to the states to compete with toyota, chevy, dodge, and nissan, and B. ive the ranger some real balls in the power department.....my girl just got a 05 ranger edge, its a good looking truck, just lacks in power....
I like this a lot. The F-series has been the number one line of pickup trucks a long time, and this will only add to that. While the Ranger name plate deserves just as much respect as anything, I do think it's time for it to go. People associate that name with a small, compact truck, and carrying it over to a mid-size wouldn't be proper.. kinda like renaming the Five Hundred the Taurus.. bad plan..
This should be good for Ford though, although I do wonder if the will drop the Sport Track, considering it sells very well and attains decent fuel economy.
The only problem with axing the Ranger is Ford makes a good deal of money on them. They only cost about $7K to build according to Pop. Sci..
At the rate Ford is going now, I can definitely see them building a really tough mid-size that can uphold the F-series reputation.. I don't think it's unrealistic at all.
around here I see 90% of rangers being driven for civil use. Most work trucks are an F series or Chevies. I don't understand why there isn't REAL compact truck being released if GAS just keeps going up and up. Or is the F100 suppose to be something for those people who wanted a F150, but just couldn't muster up to it because of the gas prices? I mean I see the point to reduce developement cost, but 9/10ths the size? Ok... so a F150 is a full size truck right? And a 10% smaller one is considered a Mid Size? Seems rediculous...
I think it will end up being more the 7/10, or even most likely 4/5.
And yes, AJ, the purpose is to get the toughness of the F-series, as well as fuel economy.
As of now, the F150 may or may not get the Ecoboost V6. I think the idea behind this is to put the Ecoboost in a slightly smaller truck in order to maximize fuel economy.
Why don't they actually make a real compact truck? Maybe something that's 20% smaller? Since from my understanding if you're driving a V6 Ranger you're going to get around 2~3.5 mpg more than the base F-150. Is it really worth it? If I was in for a truck I think I would go for a base model Full size rather than a higher end mid size truck.
My point being, why would anyone get the V6 midsize when it's not that great compared to the base model full size? And if the majority of people who buy the midsize trucks is looking for a 4 cyl and the use of a pickup with great gasmilage why make it marginally better in terms of fuel efficiency? Why not try to make a real compact truck? Instead of a F150-light?
The Ranger is capable of 23 mpg or better, which is fairly good.
Stangguy, the report is it will have the V6 Ecoboost. From what I understand, the I4 Ecoboost won't be making very much torque, which will be bad for a 5K pound truck.
The F150 will also be getting the V6 Ecoboost treatment though for the 2010 model year, along with a diesel.
