I notice what appeared to be a rust bubble at the lower right hand side of the driver's door opening. I started scraping away the top layer of paint only to discover that it wasn't rust at all.
It was lead that had been pushed out position by the edge of the door due to it being out of adjustment.

Scraped away the distorted lead, beveling the edges.

Treated the area with POR-15

Filled the area with POR-15 "Straight edge".

Removed the tape to reinstall it 1/8" away from filler to keep sanding pattern to a minimum.

Sanded out and ready for primer

Moved tape out another 1/8" to sand primer

Painted with an air brush

Wet sanded with 2000 grit and polished out by hand with 3M finishing compound.

Good as new! Ready for the next show.

Turn out really good. I was gonna suggest to back fold the masking tape when priming so that you won't have hard edges to sand (featheredge) down. I was used to work at a body shop and I, plus everyone else, hated featheredging when the primer is thick. Pretty sure you know that since you did it when painting.

Ahh, you're saying that by back-folding the tape I'm creating a tapered edge in the primer, reducing sanding and the noticeable sharp edge. Great tip. Thanks!

You can see what he's talking about in this picture.

When you paint to a taped edge the paint builds up against the square edge of the tape. When you remove the tape it leaves an
exposed edge that may not be all that visible, but you can sure feel it.

What he's saying, if I understand correctly, is to fold the masking tape lengthwise and apply it with part of the sticky side facing up.

That leaves a slight gap under the tape at the edge that paint can get under in ever decreasing thickness as it fills the tapered space.

When the primer dries and the tape is removed you are left with a tapered edge that require little work to feather out to the surrounding area.

oh ok, i see what you're saying. i kept thinking that you were talking about folding it the opposite way, which would form an even taller edge.

I'm amazed at your multitalentedness. You seem to be an excellent autobody guy. How's the limo coming along?

As I get closer to summer my other activities come on line, unlike you Floridians that have good weather all year. Our home sits on a hilly, heavily landscaped acre so I spend a fair amount of time on outdoor chores. I love cutting the grass. It's totally mindless and looks so good when I'm done. My wife tends all the plants and beds after the initial clean-up, so we both stay busy.

The rest of my time is spent prepping the show cars after driving them. No one likes a dirty show car.

I'll work on the limo some during the day, while I'm at the shop, but hooky starts at noon on good days.

Today was 90*, way too hot for anything other than the A/C inside the house. WooHoo can't wait for summer (rolls eyes)
