i've had two rwd Celicas in the past, a white '83 GTS notchback, with a brown cloth interior, and a red '85 GTS liftback, with a gray and black interior. the first one was pretty basic, with the pump-up seats and manual windows/locks, and a sunroof. the red one was loaded with power stuff, they were both 5 speeds.
the white one had an electrical fire at 3 years old and toasted. the second one was bought when it was 10 years old, on a whim. it only had 45,000 miles, and was perfect. until the engine blew at 50,000, but i put a new one in and drove it another few years, and gave it to a friend.
i would go for a restored one someday to relive those days...
Wow sucky how you seemed to come across one that wasn't reliable since in our pool it seems like these cars go past 100K with no problems and only start to show signs of major problems at 150K. And you had 85s, the best of them. The 85 GTS had the rear disc brakes that were available in 84 but in 85 they bumped up the differential size to 7.5" from 6.7" and the engine got a little make over as well. Plus I'm more of a fan of how the 84/85 head lights and rear tail lights look.
Hey if you see a convertible you should buy it! They were made only here in the states and I think out of CA, it's kind of an american tradition it seems to have verts =P
my '83 was an early model-it came with GT badges on the back and steering wheel. after i got it, the GT-S badges were ready, and i had them installed. the interior was simply years ahead of the competition, in the use of soft plastics, equipment, and design. no one else had those sport seats with the hand-pumped lumbar supports either. i think those were the most supportive seats i've ever had in a car.
the only thing i don't like about the convertible, is the fact you can't recline the sport seats.. the rear bulkeads on the sides gets in the way. one of the drawbacks of a chopped coupe, instead of a designed from scratch convertible.
i really love the styling of all rwd Celicas. not so much after they switched to fwd.
yea, they became a whole new car after they switched to FWD almost like they should be called celicas anymore> The lost katana like edge, like the MKI MR2. But I'm pretty sure that 83 didn't come with disc brakes.
those seats are pretty nice. I took them out of mine because they weigh a lot, but they are really slick. I also really like the seats in an 82 E-Class, the head rests are prefect for me, they just cradle the neck.
